Plants in the canopy include heavy, snake-like vines and epiphytes ("air plants") such as mosses, lichens, and orchids (that grow on trees).

The understory is really a dark, cool environment that is underneath the leaves but over the ground. The majority of the understory of a rainforest has therefore little light that plant growth is restricted.
