Sumatran Rhinoceros/Sumatran Rhinos (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis)
Sumatran rhinos can be found starting from the foot of the Himalayas in the forest and eastern India, spread across Myanmar, Thailand, and peninsular Malaysia, and on the island of Sumatra and Borneo. In general, this type can live a better life in their natural habitat than the Javan rhinoceros. This is partly possible because these animals more inhabit the mountains and forests in the highlands where there is not much disruption of development and logging. In contrast with the Javan rhinoceros, which is the type who live in coastal areas and river valleys (SKBI, 1993:57).

Sumatran rhino populations in Indonesia and around the world are threatened with extinction. Saaat population there is very small, scattered and most threatened by poaching and loss of habitat. Even though no loss occurs if the number further, the existing population is very small so it is very sensitive to natural disasters, genetic and demographic weakness, as commonly occurs in small populations. Based on data from the International Rhino Foundation in 2005 estimated population of Sumatran rhinos currently only about 300 (three hundred) tails are scattered in the forests of Sumatra, spreading there in Way Kambas National Park, Gunung Leuser National Park, South Bukit Barisan National Park National Park, Kerinci Seblat and forests in Riau (Dedi Candra, 2005: 6-7. "Sumatran rhino (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis)," Warta Conservation Way Kambas National Park. Second Edition).

The existence of endangered Sumatran rhino due to poaching since 1992. Hunting that occurs frequently breaking the chain of developments that endangered species since 2001 included in Appendix I Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna / CITES (Convention on international trade in endangered flora and fauna) (MoF Press Release No: S.374 / II/PIK-1/2005).

Factors causing the declining population of Sumatran rhinos, but because of the threat of poaching and the encroachment and forest conversion, among others, also due to the difficulty of this species to breed in habitats which are influenced by the nature and characteristics of these animals.
