Tokay (Gekko Gecko)

These days geckos have become increasingly popular in the reptile holding community. Geckos are a significant and varied group of lizards this includes over 300 subspecies across the world. There are a assortment of land based geckos (terrestrial) together with tree dwelling (arboreal) geckos. Geckos consist of a huge range for colors and patterns (also sometimes also known as "morphs") some rather bright and vibrant whilst others far more subtle.

The Tokay was the main gecko to be clinically named by Linnaeus during 1758. Their closest relative stands out as the Palm gecko (Gekko Vittatus). Any Tokay gets it's identity for it's loud, famous "To-kay! " calling tone. In it's native habitat this sound are usually heard from great distances as well as being mainly produced by males planning to attract females or as the warning to other male tokays that they can be within another's established location. Female Tokays are also able of making the same calling sound but are in general quieter and less about to call as often when the males.

Tokays can also produce many different clicks, barks and squeaking sounds and tend to be widely recognized as the most vocal with all the different geckos. They also contain a distinctive "gaping" characteristic wherein they open their jaws wide and puff themselves up from a defensive display if these feel threatened. Tokay geckoes are among the many largest geckoes alive at this time. Other names in Tokek during Malaysia & Indonesia, Anggak during Brunei, and Tokay is most widespread name.
